BROWNE LEADS LOCAL DEMONSTRATION AGAINST POST OFFICE CLOSURE PROGRAMME

Taunton constituency MP Jeremy Browne has joined Liberal Democrat councillors and local residents in a demonstration against post office closures in Taunton Deane. They gathered outside Shuttern post office, which is one of seven condemned post offices in the area.

Jeremy Browne said:
"Hundreds of people showed their enthusiastic backing for our demonstration against local post office closures. Passing drivers were hooting their horns in support and dozens of post office customers signed our petition.

"There is widespread public dismay about what is happening to our post office network. The service is relied upon by many vulnerable people and appreciated by a large number of residents from all backgrounds.

"I have also visited Kingston St Mary post office, which has been ear-marked for closure. Many residents of the village are deeply unhappy about losing a valued community service and realise how inconvenient it will be to travel to alternative post offices.

"The closures in our area are part of a national programme and there seems to be an absolute determination to drive them through regardless of public opinion. That is not a reason, however, to give up and meekly accept the proposals, and I will continue to campaign vigorously on behalf of the thousands of local people who support their post office and depend on its services."
